Countess Constance de Markievicz"Heroic Death"Watercolour, gouache & gold paint on card9 1/2" x 16"Signed "C de M, Holloway Jail, Feb 1919"A three verse poem by her sister, Eva Gore Booth, illuminated in the Celtic Irish manner with decorations & decorative capitals, flanked by pale images, one emblematic of freedom, the other of a woman with sword unsheathed; gilt ground title including the Irish tricolour; gadrooned border & decorative spandrels. The poem commences:-"No man shall deck their resting place with flowersBehind a prison wall they stood to dieYet in those flowerless tragic graves of oursBuried the broken dreams of Ireland lie"Constance & her sister Eva Gore-Booth of Lissadell were born into the Irish ascendancy (see inter alia Yeats` poem "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth & Con Markievicz") but they both reacted against their upbringing & became extremely active politically with Constance participating in the 1916 Easter Rising, after which she was condemned to death but reprieved, & Edith becoming a major player in a number of causes including the suffragette movement. Constance spent considerable time in prison & maintained a correspondence with her sister. Whilst in Holloway she was able to exercise her considerable artistic talents (she had trained at the Slade & in Paris) of which this is an excellent & evocative example.Provenance: By inheritance & descent from the famous Scottish suffragette Ethel Moorhead (oral provenance only). A Votes for Women clasp with ribbon & a No Vote-No Tax badge are included with the lot & are believed to have been Moorhead`s. Moorhead was a high profile activist who was imprisoned several times.
