  • 11 Portrait of General Harding byHenry Stull, Oil on CanvasHenry Stull (American, 1851-1913), signed l.l., with additional printed biographical information about the horse; 15.5 x 22 in.Named after General Harding of Belle MeadePlantation, located in Nashville, Tennessee,the racehorse General Harding, foaled in 1881, led a successful career during the late 19th century. Sired by Great Tom, the winner ofthe St. James Palace Stakes at Ascot and the Doncaster Stakes at Doncaster in 1876, the Breeders' Hand Book and Guide named General Harding "the best two-year old winner of 1883." The racehorse earned this accolade after he won nine races out of ten starts, includingthe Harold Stakes, which many considered to be one of the top two-year old stakes in the United States. General Harding also raced asa three-year old and started in two races as a four-year old before he pulled up lame. In all, General Harding started in a total of twenty races, with fourteen wins, one place, and three shows. With craquelure and relined. Estimates: $5,000 - 7,000

  • 24 Newport Tilt-top Fly Tea TableNewport, Rhode Island, 1740-1760, a teatable with dish top tilting on a tapering Doric column, attached to top with stepped battens, and tripod base, the legs ending in five-toed claw and ball feet; ht. 27.75, dia. 28 in.Tables with these distinctive feet, along with a Doric column pedestal and stepped battens, have been associated with other Newport fly tables, as illustrated in Patricia Kane's article, "The Pallidian Style Furniture: Fly Tea Tables", as published in American Furniture 1999, pp 1-16. The five-toed claw and ball feet and the stepped battons are believed to be a characteristic of Newport 'fly' tables, although the feet could be a later regional adaptation of snake feet, updating the piece to the urbane style of the Chippendale claw and ball foot. Split in top. Estimates: $4,000 - 6,000
