  • A RARE COALPORT ORNITHOLOGICAL BLUE GROUND VASE AND COVER, CIRCA 1870 of tripartite shield shape with domed cover, painted by John Randall with three panels of birds of prey on branches, divided by vertical pilasters enriched with diamond pattern straps, the conforming tripartite foot gilt with diaper and trellis decoration, gilt ampersand mark to cover 44cm height, knob glued, hairline crack to cover and to rim (2) John Randall (1810-1890) was one of the best known Coalport artists and a great local celebrity. He was apprenticed to his uncle Thomas Martin Randall and painted at the Rockingham factory before joining Coalport in 1835. His earlier work tended to feature exotic birds, but in the 1860s he began to paint more naturalistic studies, often birds of prey in their natural surroundings. In addition to his work at Coalport, he was a botanist, geologist, published local historian and journalist, starting a local newspaper, as well as serving as a postmaster and a borough councillor.

  • A GERMAN ENGRAVED GLASS LARGE COMMEMORATIVE GOBLET, SAXONY OR UPPER SILESIA, CIRCA 1730 the rounded funnel bowl engraved with a monument inscribed 'ZÜCHTIG GERECHT GOTTSEELIG' and the personifications of Chastity, the Blessed and Justice above the motto 'WO SIND SIE' within a foliate cartouche beneath the inscription 'Sie Fragt nach guthen Leuthen.', the reverse engraved with Hope holding an anchor above the motto 'WENN KOMMT SIE' and inscribed beneath the rim, 'Die Hoffung bessrer Zeiten.', raised on a knopped stem and plain foot 28cm height, foot repaired The figures and mottos appear to refer to the Convention of Altranstädt held on the 1st September 1707. This agreement gave religious freedom to Protestants in Silesia. For medals commemorating this convention and bearing many of the same mottos, see Victoria and Albert Museum, collections nos. 1470-1882 and 1464-1882. For a similar cup (with cover) engraved with the same mottos and figures, see Auktionshaus Dr Fischer, Heilbronn, 17th March 2006, lot 127.
