  • CRESSWELL, SAMUEL GURNEY. A Series of Eight Sketches in Colour...of the Voyage of H.M.S. Investigator (Captain M'Clure), During the Discovery of the North-West Passage. Day and Son, July 25th 1854. Folio, cont. half maroon morocco gilt (rubbed). Coloured chart and 8 chromolithographic plates (minimal spotting to plate margins). Bookplate of William Miles (1801 - 87) of Dixfield House, Exeter. Miles was a local magistrate with a great interest in horses and their welfare; author of The Horse's Foot and How to Keep it Sound, 1850 and General Remarks on Stables...1860. Cresswell (later Capt., 1827 - 67) was Second Lieutenant and ship's artist on this voyage under Capt. Robert M'Clure in search of the Northwest Passage. With the Investigator locked in the ice from September 1851 to the spring of 1853, several men became ill, and Cresswell was put in charge of transporting them to Capt. Henry Kellett's ship, 160 miles away, which he and the Inuit interpreter completed without loss of life. Cresswell was the first naval officer to cross the entire Northwest Passage. See illustrations.
