'A Distinguished Visitors' Book compiled for The 1948 Olympic Games
inscribed on the title page
'XIVth Olympiad July 29th to August 14th 1948, Distinguished Visitors' Book, Empire Stadium, Empire Pool & Sports Arena Wembley', the pages signed by various members of British and European Royalty, Political Figures, Athletes and other personalities from the Sporting World, signatures include those of King George VI, Princess Margaret, Philip Duke of Edinburgh, Mountbatten of Burma, Clement Attlee, Anthony Eden, Stafford Cripps, The Shah of Persia, Ernest Bevin, The Maharajah of Jaipur, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and many others,
with approximately 300 signatures on 58 numbered leaves (with some additional pages), page size 10 3/4 x 8 1/4in, the book with red leather binding and applied white metal Olympic motif on front cover
The 1948 Summer Games were held in London at short notice, despite rationing continuing in the UK. A record 59 Nations were represented with over 4000 athletes participating in 19 different sport disciplines. The Games were hailed a success and triumph over hardship, and were the First Games to be shown on television.
