A MEISSEN GROUP OF A PUG AND HER PUPPY MID 18TH CENTURY modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775)
the dog on her haunches with left paw raised the puppy suckling beneath 21cm high some restoration Kändler’s work records list in February-May 1741: ‘Ein Mopß Hündigen wie er an dem alten säugt’ [A pug dog as he suckles at the old] and in his Taxa: ‘1 Mittelmäßiger Möpßhund mit einem jungen Möpßgen natürl. vorgestellet vor Ihro Maj. den König.’ [A medium-size pug dog with a young pug naturally depicted for his Majesty the King]. Provenance: Meissen Figures from the Barlow Collection the collection started by Sir Thomas Dalmahoy Barlow GBE (1883-1964) banker and industrialist also known as an art collector and historian; added to by his son Basil Stephen Barlow (1918-1991); thence by family descent.
