Lions of Windsor
Lions of Windsor 2019 - Thursday 28th November 2019

DIAMOND EMPRESS

Artist: Anna Kompaniets

After completing her degree in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, Anna Kompaniets worked with some of the most talented artists and designers in UK including the late Alexander McQueen, Andrew Logan, Vivienne Westwood and Hew Locke among others. She has been at the forefront of bridging the gap between fashion and art and recycling consumer waste in creative ways.

Her work has shown at Tate Britain, The Globe Theatre, Turner Contemporary and the Maritime Museum. She is inspired by history, the people in it, contemporary culture and the intricate beauty of nature. Anna said: 'I felt really inspired by the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria, particularly the juxtaposition of her feline gentleness and the romantic story of her and Prince Albert, offset by her power as the Queen and Empress of India. For my lion design I wanted to create an intimate portrait of Queen Victoria using symbols and colours from her life and Windsor. I hid Queen Victoria's crown above the nose of the lion, gave the lion her blue eyes and a Swarovski crystal symbolising the Koh-i-noor diamond, like an Indian tikka jewel adorns the forehead.

'The lion design features a heart which dissolves into 9 streams, to mark Victoria's 9 children, which merge to a river to reflect the River Thames in Windsor. Victoria's wedding shoes, pearls, orange blossom (as worn in her hair on her wedding day) and violets - her favourite flowers, which I used to create the storyline.'
