LUCIE RIE (1902-1995); an early sgraffito porcelain bowl, pitted cream glaze to interior and manganese
to rim and exterior and decorated inside and out with radiating lines, impressed LR mark, made in the 1950s, diameter 21.5cm. (D) Provenance: The Norman and Kathleen Makinson Collection. Originally a gift from the artist to a furniture shop owner on Sloane Street, London and then subsequently gifted to the Makinsons. Norman Makinson was a ceramic artist and designer and is probably best known for his 1951 Festival of Britain commemorative mug. Note: There is a bloat to the well which has distorted the foot and is probably why the bowl was gifted by Rie rather than sold.
