Egyptian Royal Sphinx Statue. Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A limestone statue of a sphinx with the facial
features of a Ptolemaic king; couchant on an integral rectangular base, the long, slender leonine body with detailed rib cage; tail curling up around the right hind-leg, wearing Nemes headdress with uraeus cobra to the brow. 12.83 kg, 45cm (17 3/4"") Fair condition, repaired. Property of a gentleman; from a Mayfair, London, UK, gallery. See Stanwick, P. Portraits of the Ptolemies: Greek Kings as Egyptian Pharaohs, Austin, 2010, p. 68 for discussion on the sphinx in Ptolemaic art. The early Ptolemies visually emphasised their role as traditional Egyptian kings through stylistic continuities. The head of this sphinx displays features that are a strong continuation of the style of the 30th dynasty.
