and Minerva, 1754, Gold Prize Medal, to the RT HON EARL WINTERTON MDCCLXXVI, 2613 LOMBARDY POPLAR TREES PLANTED, gilt medal 43mm, 38.3gm, Eimer 648, Extremely Fine The Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce was founded in 1754, and in 1908 became the Royal Society of Arts. The Society offered medals in gold and silver to people who could successfully achieve one of a number of published challenges. Earl Winterton, in Galway, Ireland, was created in 1766 for Edward Turnour, 1st Baron Winterton, who represented Bramber in the House of Commons. Turnour had already been created Baron Winterton, of Gort in the County of Galway, in 1761, and was made Viscount Turnour, of Gort in the County of Galway, at the same time as he was given the earldom.
