  • The Tout [Peter Ronald Buchanan] ARCHER'S GHOST an original artwork for a Tout cartoon that was published in The Tatler, 32 by 51cm., 12 1/2 by 20in., framed & glazed; the artwork comes with the original key to identify the jockeys and is chained to the lower part of the frame so they can be hung together In the finishing order behind Fred Archer's ghost the jockeys are Steve Donoghue, Frank Bullock, Brownie Carslake, George Duller, Charlie Elliott, Joe Childs and George Archibald A label to the bottom right hand corner of the picture glass states that The Tout gave this artwork to the Craven Club in Newmarket in 1945.

  • Frank Griggs (Newmarket photographer) DERBY WINNERS 1934 TO 1939 (A SERIES OF SIX) hand painted over a photographic base, uniformly mounted, framed & glazed, titled on the paper covered backboards, the 1934 & 1935 examples 15 by 25.5cm., the others 17.5 by 20cm., 7 by 8in. From 1936 the series becomes a formal portrait of the winning horse and jockey. The first two issues of 1934 & 1935 are more complicated compositions, being scenes of the finish and a pre-race paddock scene respectively. The series features Windsor Lad, Bahram, Mahmoud, Midday, Bois Roussel & Blue Peter.

  • W F Perrin (20th century) ARKLE signed & titled, oil on canvas, 46 by 35.5cm., 18 by 14in., framed Arkle is universally regarded as being the greatest steeplechaser of all time. His Timeform rating of 212 has never been eclipsed. In recent times Kauto Star has come closest, with a Timeform rating of 191. Arkle won three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups between 1964 and 1966, whilst other major victories included the King George VI Chase (1965), the Irish Grand National (1964), two Hennessy Gold Cups (1964 & 1965), three Leopardstown Chases (1964-1966 inc.), a Whitbread Gold Cup (1965), the Gallagher Gold Cup (1965), the Punchestown Gold Cup (1963) and the Powers Gold Cup (1963). There would almost certainly have been more but for a career ending injury sustained in the 1966 King George.

Lot 140

  • W F Perrin (20th century) PENWOOD FORGE MILL signed & titled, oil on canvas, 46 by 35.5cm., 18 by 14in., framed Penwood Forge Mill was hugely popular on the show jumping circuit and most famously won the European Championships, the King George V Gold Cup and the Horse and Hounds Cup within the space of six days! His early successes included winning the Grand Prix in Ostend and coming second in the Nations Cup competitions at Ostend, Rotterdam and Geneva, both in 1971. In the following year, he came second in the Nations Cup in Rome, before achieving a first in London. He then went on to win back-to-back Nations Cups in 1977 and 1978.

The strikingly beautiful grey Anglo Arabian was a regular competitor at shows, and came close to winning the European Championships at Hickstead in 1973. The gelding and his German rider Alwin Schockemohle took the silver.
